Sino-Swedish class. Wednesday 08/04 Giving Directions

O.K., I shall make it short to-day as it seems that many of you are not reading these articles.

To-day, apart from some more pronunciation work, we focused on directions. This is a subject which, in a strange country and campus, you will find relevent as its always difficult finding our way round at first. We just discussed the very common words that are used in giving directions to-day, like;

motorway...the word used instead of Highway by people in Europe, the Continent and U.K.
road...a road is of course, much narrower than a motorway. Usually links one town to another
so there are not necessarily many houses or buildings lining it
street...is what we usually call a road with houses and shops on it
High Street...the main shopping area in a town or village
path...narrow, paved walkway
track...not paved, a narrow way through field or grass made by many people or animals walking
junction...where more than two roads meet
crossroad...where two roads meet (rural)
intersection...where two roads meet (urban)
t.junction...where one road runs into another
veer...to curve in a certain direction

Search & Rescue, Animal Rescue, Wildlife Rescue, can be accessed through the Emergency Number in Western Countries. PLEASE enter the emergency number for your area into your phone as soon as you arrive.

Also enter the number for Inquiries as they are equally useful.

  2. Not just "sofa" - I think you'll be *Robinson Crusoe!

Glad that you think these will be helpfull to you. And I hope you go around and do a lot of exploring on your own: its the best way to learn about a place.

*Robinson Crusoe was the only person to survive a shipwreck and lived alone on a desert island for many years, in a famous English novel.

We use his name when we mean a person is alone, or the only one to do or think something.
